Art In Umbria > Medieval Art, Renaissance Art, Modern Art > Italian Art

I’ve put together a list of the main places to see art in Umbria. There are many towns and villages not included here where you will find frescoed churches or paintings worthy of a visit. For example, both Panicale and Citta della Pieve have paintings by Perugino and the church of Sant’ Agostino in Gubbio has beautiful frescoes by the little known Umbrian painter Ottaviano Nelli. Gubbio also has a newly attributed Raphael in the Museo Diocesano and an interesting art collection in the Palazzo dei Consoli, however there are no masterpieces there.

In addition to the places below, I have just discovered a superb contemporary art collection near Citta della Pieve open two days a week to the public: Contemporary Art Collection, Il Giardino dei Lauri, Citta della Pieve, Umbria

Assisi

The home town of St. Francis is also home to the most important collection of medieval art in the world. The walls of the enormous Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi are covered in frescoes by the most important artists of the time. The most famous frescoes are the Life Of St. Francis Fresco Cycle usually attributed to Giotto. You will also find more frescoes by Giotto, Simone Martini ( Chapel Of St Martin ), Pietro Lorenzetti, Cimabue and many others.
