Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary Kelli Trumble presented a Joint Effort Marketing (JEM) grant in the amount of $8,350 to Lois Carlson, director of the Madeline Island Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday to promote tourism on Madeline Island.

“The JEM grant awarded to this deserving tourism promotion demonstrates the power of travel and its ability to generate significant economic benefits,” Trumble said. “This project opens the door to new markets for Madeline Island and capitalizes on cross marketing of area businesses to stimulate traveler spending.”

The Madeline Island Chamber of Commerce developed the sales promotion to attract new travelers by tapping into the Duluth market. Using a variety of Internet sites and print ads, the sales promotion offers Duluth visitors and residents special savings at Madeline Island businesses. The promotion began July 29 and lasts until September 29 and is expected to bring an estimated 1,200 new visitors and $164,150 in traveler spending.

Support SB 107: Keep Electronic Waste Out of Our Landfills

Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters urges you to support SB 107, which is before the full Senate on Tuesday.

Every year, thousands of tons of old televisions and video screens from computers are thrown into Wisconsin’s landfills. This electronic waste can leak toxic substances like mercury, cadmium, and chromium that can cause developmental problems in children or lead to cancer. SB 107 will keep toxic electronics out of our landfills by requiring that producers of electronic waste collect and properly dispose of video display devices once they are no longer wanted by consumers.

Support AB 138: Reestablish an Independent DNR Secretary

Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters urges you to support AB 138, which is before the Senate Committee on Transportation, Tourism, Forestry, and Natural Resources on Thursday.

Creating an independent Secretary to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was selected as one of four priorities by Wisconsin’s conservation community for this legislative session. Passage of AB 138would restore integrity to natural resource management by allowing the Natural Resources Board to select the DNR Secretary as opposed to the current process where the Secretary is a political appointment of the Governor.

Support AB 401: Move Wisconsin Towards Cleaner Transportation Fuels

Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters urges you to support AB 401, which is before the Assembly Committee on Renewable Energy and Rural Affairs on Thursday.

Wisconsin’s transportation fuels are currently almost exclusively out-of-state petroleum and corn or soybean derived ethanol, which are harmful to our environment and increase the impact of global warming. AB 401 would begin to move Wisconsin towards more cutting-edge, clean energy fuels and technologies by setting a goal for renewable fuels sold in state that meet or exceed the federal greenhouse gas reduction requirements, requiring the state to assess trends in and impacts of the production and use of bioenergy crops, and creating financial incentives for better land use practices such as limiting row crops and keeping land in easements.
Conservation NOW announces the pro-conservation positions on issues before the Senate, Assembly and/or Governor in the week ahead to state legislators.
